SPFx extensions not appearing on the Command Bar

August-October 2024 issue with list CommandSets

If your organization purchased Lightning Forms, Lightning Tools Actions, or DeliverPoint, and if your account has SharePoint Full Control permission to a list or library, you should normally be able to see the relevant options on the list's command bar.

Problem statement

As of August 2024, an update was made by Microsoft that is sometimes preventing any SharePoint Framework CommandSet extensions from appearing on a list's command bar when it initially loads. You should be able to resolve this by performing a hard refresh (Ctrl-F5) to clear your browser cache.

The issue is caused by the “new modern” List UI attempting to load; Microsoft had fixed the issue in the Spring of 2024 by allowing the “old modern” List UI to load in cases where a SPFx CommandSet exists. This worked well for some months, but recently began to recur, apparently due to the amount of caching taking place to make their previous fix work. Microsoft is working on a fix; please see this GitHub issue.

Latest updates

As of September 6, Microsoft has rolled back the September 4 update, so we believe you should now be seeing the Lightning Tools command bar buttons again. However, we are continuing to receive reports from some customers that the command bar buttons are not displaying on some lists that have been converted to the new list UI, but they are working on other new UI lists. We are working with Microsoft to determine what the difference is. Please try the potential workarounds listed below in the meantime.

As of September 4, 2024, it appears that Microsoft made another update which is preventing the previously recommended workarounds from working. Please see this new GitHub issue for updates. We are in contact with Microsoft as an urgent issue.

In the September 4 update, you should be able to see the command bar extensions within the command bar's “overflow” (…) menu, though the icons are rendered incorrectly. However, custom List Actions you have created are currently not rendering at all when you select a list item. This behavior has also been raised with Microsoft. We also notice that a customized form will open in Full-page mode; this has also been raised as an issue.

Potential workarounds

In the meantime, if you find it annoying to press Ctrl-F5 to make the Command Bar options appear, and if you are not making use of SharePoint list syncing, then until this is fixed, you can try Microsoft's recommended workaround as stated in the GitHub thread: Disabling "Sync" on your affected lists should fix that issue as well. You can do this by going to the Microsoft Lists app, opening the "..." menu of an affected list, and selecting "Stop syncing". Alternatively, Microsoft suggests disabling Sync on your device.

Another setting to try disabling is the Offline Client Availability option under List Settings > Advanced Settings. This workaround seems to work for most customers until Microsoft permanently resolves this issue.
